Sonamarg: The Meadow of Gold Adventure

Sonamarg at 2,800m is the last major town before Ladakh. The name means "Meadow of Gold" due to yellow flowers in spring. Thajiwas Glacier trek is popular (7km, easy). Hire ponies or trek on foot through snow fields even in summer. Sindh River offers white-water rafting. Visit Zero Point (89km, permit required). Camping in meadows is spectacular. Trout fishing permits available. Day trip from Srinagar possible (80km, 2 hours). Accommodation limited, mostly seasonal camps and hotels. Road closes in winter. Best visit: May-September. Carry warm clothes, altitude sickness possible.
